If you purchased a home in 2018, it is time to complete and mail in your Homestead Exemption form in order to receive a discount on your property taxes. You will normally receive a form from your local County taxing authority in the mail between January and the end of March. You have until April 30th to file this exemption.
Filing is Free!
Should you receive a request from any service or person other than the County where you reside asking for a fee to file the document DISREGARD IT. Please be aware that filing your Homestead Exemption is free through your local taxing district.
To download a pdf fillable form, click your applicable county appraisal district below. Complete and mail/deliver to the appraisal district. This same form should be mailed to you in the next few weeks – but here it is should you wish to be ahead of the game! In order to qualify for the exemption you must provide a copy of your Texas Drivers License or ID Card with the address matching the physical address of your property. You can receive more detailed info by visiting the appraisal district website listed below.
If you receive a survey from the County or City asking you what you paid for your home, you do not have to disclose this information. Only your loan amount was recorded by the title company. This may help you keep your taxes down a little longer.
